Hold The Rope
Missionary William Carey is often called the Father of the Modern Missionary Movement. In October of 1792, Carey told his Christian friends,
There is a gold mine (of souls) in India…but it seems as deep as the center of the earth; I will go down— but remember that you must hold the rope.
A small group of pastors gathered around Carey and agreed to support him. They formed the Baptist Missionary Society. They grabbed hold of the rope so that he could go down into the gold mine.
This rope-holding image is still appropriate today. God may not be calling us to “Go” but we have a Sending responsibility for those who do.
One pastor said, “There are three kinds: the Goers, the Senders, and the Disobedient.” That may sound a little strong but think about it. We may not be called to Go…but we are all called to care. To actively participate and care.
We are inviting you to join us and learn how to hold the rope. We can grow in this together.
Carey also said, “Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God.”
